Another necessity for my shop is the container for treats. I love the tinted glass treat container, but its contents are even better. Homemade chocolate chip cookies are a treat that I really enjoy, but they don’t seem to last long.

Some of the regular treats I enjoy include walnuts that have been soaked and dehydrated. Bananas are a favorite, and an apple a day is delicious. Hard boiled eggs are a good boost-giver. Sometimes I will snack on a whole avocado sprinkled with sea salt. Seltzer water is also a treat for me. I buy it by the case at Costco. Of course, my favorite treat is dark chocolate. There are so many delicious varieties with low sugar content available today.

As with most woodworkers, I totally lose track of time while working. This means I easily forget the need to break for meals—especially when turning a bowl, the hours slip away while I’m in oblivion. In the past, I’ve gone all day without eating and my work and I both suffered.

So, visible snacks remind me of the need to be replenished. I find I do better, become less drowsy and irritable when I eat regularly and avoid sugary treats. Of course, I used to eat peanut butter by the jar and ice cream by the gallon before my health began to decline. I had to realize I am worth the extra expense of nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Time spent in the shop is incredibly enjoyable. If I don’t take care of myself though, how can I really enjoy any activity? Remaining alert is essential to safety in the shop. I can’t afford to be distracted by feeling poorly. That’s why healthy treats are great. Adding the goodie jar with its variety of treats is the icing on the cake.
